Great Expectations is a story about Pip’s adventures in growing up and becoming a gentleman. He is raised a middle class boy with his older sister and her husband. At a young age he is given an opportunity to go and do favors with a very wealthy lady uptown, named Miss Havisham. At Miss Havisham’s he meets a girl named Estella that will forever change his life. Ever since she told him about being so, “course and common,” he tells himself he wants to become a gentleman. One day, his dreams become reality when somebody shows up to tell him that he will be given the opportunity to become a gentleman. On arriving in London, Pip finds out that not everything is what he had hoped it to be. His great expectations are not turning out the same way he thought they would. As the reader, we follow Pip through his journeys and what he learns about growing up. By the end of the book Pip learns to never forget where he came from, and no matter how wealthy you are, you must remember the ones that love you.
