Narrative

Have you ever done something that didn’t quite live up to your expectations?  There are many times in my life when I hype something up so much, that when the you get there, it’s nothing as great as you had expected.  When you had wanted something so badly, but you just couldn’t have it, then finally when you get it you realize it is nothing special.  Sometimes they are small things, like wanting a possession that the people around you have, but when you get it, it’s not as amazing as you had hoped.  There are also many bigger examples in my life, like growing up.  All throughout middle school, I looked up to the high school as an amazing place.  I couldn’t wait until I could go there, the freedom and the atmosphere seemed that much better than any school or grade I had previously experienced.   The buildup to high school was so big, but when it finally came, it was nothing special.  I got there, it’s better, but it’s still school.  The work is harder and once again, I was let down.  There was nothing special about going to high school, except in my mind it was something that was going to be amazing.  This connects to the story Great Expectations with Pip and his expectations.  He was given the chance to be a gentleman and came into riches by someone unknown.  Pip had been waiting for years to meet and find out who the person was, who gave him this opportunity to have great expectations.  When the day came, and he learns that this person was completely unexpected, he is greatly disappointed.  Many times in my life, I was greatly disappointed in something I had been waiting a long time for, just like Pip in Great Expectations.
